UNDERWAY FOR SAN DIEGO. CONDITION IV SET. 1011 — ARRIVE AND MOOR PIER #4. U.S. NAVAL STATION, SAN DIEGO. - HOLIDAY ROUTINE

Original Logbook Page

From the Plan of the Day, 18 July 1968: At 0830, a press helicopter took aerial photographs as the crew — in Tropical Whites — formed the number "29" on the flight deck, visible from the Cabrillo Monument on Point Loma. A large sign on the port side read "Happiness is Homecoming." Balloons streamed from the forecastle and fantail. After mooring at Pier 4, refreshments were served on the helo deck and mess decks; dependents and guests were invited aboard for tours. Signed by LCDR J. A. Walker, Jr., Executive Officer. [Plan of the Day]

From the San Diego Union, 19 July 1968 — "Three Warships Return From Vietnam Duty": "The Jouett, with Capt. A. T. Emerson Jr., squadron commander, aboard, wore eight parachutes painted on the superstructure below her bridge, signifying eight aviators were rescued during the deployment." Emerson, of Coronado, had served as commander of the Navy's search and rescue units in the Tonkin Gulf. Capt. Robert S. Hayes reported 932 helicopter takeoffs and landings, 25 night replenishments, and 103 days in the combat zone without a serious accident among his crew of 400. USS Preble (DLG-15) — the ship from which Lassen's Medal of Honor rescue launched — and USS Hull (DD-945) returned alongside. Hull had fired 25,000 five-inch shells, believed to be a record for a single deployment. [San Diego Union]

From the Jul 5 Familygram: "I can assure you that your JOUETTmen are returning home in good health and with a great pride in their achievements." [Familygram]

Three Warships Return From Vietnam Duty

Pictures — Pages a-1, a-3

By JAMIE RORYSON

Bands played, banners fluttered, and wives and children waved yesterday as three vessels of San Diego-based Destroyer Division One returned home from six months' Vietnam action.

The ships — the guided missile frigates Jouett (DLG-29) and Preble (DLG-15) and the destroyer Hull (DD-945) carried 1,000 officers and men.

In Vietnam, the squadron participated in search and rescue patrols for downed aviators, and bombarded shore targets.

RESCUED 8 FLIERS

The Jouett, with Capt. A. T. Emerson Jr., squadron commander, aboard, wore eight parachutes painted on the superstructure below her bridge, signifying eight aviators were rescued during the deployment. Emerson, of Coronado, served as commander of the Navy's search and rescue units in the Tonkin Gulf Area.

In an interview shortly after the ships docked at the Naval Station, Emerson said vessels of the search and rescue units stood between U.S. carriers and the shore to track incoming and outgoing planes and pick up downed aviators.

SAYS MORALE HIGH

"Morale was high on all the ships of the squadron," he said. "The men had a job to do and they did it tremendously well. I am proud of them."

Capt. Robert S. Hayes of Pacific Beach, captain of the Jouett, said his ship, as flagship of the search and rescue operations, completed 932 helicopter takeoffs and landings from its deck, made 25 night fuel and supply replenishments from other ships, and served 103 days in the combat zone without a serious accident among its crew of 400.

During the deployment, the Hull, commanded by Cmdr. G. A. Church of Coronado, fired 25,000 five-inch shells at enemy targets, believed to be a record number for a single deployment.

GIBBONS IN COMMAND

The Preble is commanded by Cmdr. P. C. Gibbons of San Diego.

NOTES

1. Morning Schedule. A Press helicopter is expected to take aerial photographs

of the ship at about 0830. Topside areas will be cleared by 0815 and all

personnel topside after that time must be in the Uniform for Entering Port

(Tropical White). Special Sea and Anchor Details with the exception of line

handlers will be set at about 0845 and all personnel not having Special Sea

and Anchor stations will assemble on the flight deck to form a "29" for pictures

being taken from Point Loma. After passing Point Loma, personnel will fall in at

Quarters for Entering Port. After passing through the new bridge construction,

the Commodore's Gig will be lowered and proceed to Pier 4. JOUETT will moor to

Pier 4 at about 1000, and leave and liberty parties may leave the ship from the

after brow as soon as agricultural clearence is obtained.

To enhance our arrival, JOUETT will stream large balloons from the forecastle

and fantail, and a large sign will be displayed on the port side saying,

"Happiness is Homecoming."

Refreshments will be served on the helo deck and mess decks, so bring your

dependents and guests aboard for a tour before heading home.

2. Personal Firearms. Personal firearms may be picked up from the Small Arms

Locker (1-133-2A) between 1030 and 1200 today. Base regulations impose stringent

restrictions on the possession of firearms. As a matter of practice, personnel

returning from Westpac are able to remove personal firearms from the base, on the

day of their return, without written permission from Base Security. It is

prudent, however, to keep firearms boxed in their original containers and to avoid

flagrant display (ie..., don't try walking through the gate with a gun under

your arm). If you want to remove your firearms from the ship, do so immediately

and don't bring it back onto the base. Otherwise, leave it in the custody

of the Gunnery Officer.

3. Electrical Power. The ship will be receiving electrical power from the

beach. Only a limited amount of power is available and care must be observed by

all hands in order to prevent loss of electrical power to the ship.

All persons must notify the duty electrician prior to energizing large

current consuming devices such as motor generator sets, vents, winches, gun

mounts, directors, etc.

4. CIAC Notes. Now is the time to consider the use of San Diego's educational

facilities. Tuition Aid is available from COM 11 thru the I & E Office at the

Naval Station. The government will pay 75% of the cost. You pay the balance.

Check with I & E for available courses and schedules.

Leave period is upon us. Do you plan to be gone during advancement

examinations? Have you turned in an address to send your exam to? If not,

do so at once to Ruiz PN1.

Information handouts regarding the medical program for you and your

dependents is available at Career Information Office.

California has a huge amount of automotive traffic. Do you know the rules

and regulations? Vehicle Code Books are on sale at Career Information Office.

Charge accounts established. Be prepared!

5. Uniforms in San Diego. Uniforms on board while in San Diego will conform

to the uniforms set forth above except, hopefully, after today we will have no

occasion for wearing the uniform for entering port for awhile. Note particularly

the uniforms for Quarterdeck and Topside Watches. Also, the uniform of the day

or on - station uniform must be worn topside after 1700 (1200 on weekends and

holidays). There will be no exceptions to this policy except for urgent dirty

work when specifically authorized by the Command Duty Officer. Dungarees are

permitted below decks only after 1700 weekdays and 1200 weekends and holidays.

6. Liberty. Liberty will expire as shown in the daily routine. Liberty will

commence at 0900 over the weekend. Note that all liberty expires at 0700 on

Monday 22 July when we commence the new hours.

7. Illegal Shooting. Illegal shooting in California State Parks. Governor

Regan states there has been an increase in shooting incidents in California State

Parks, particularly Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Illegal shooting has resulted

in the death of two park visitors in the last few months. Section 4304.1 of

the California Administrative Code states:

"Firearms. No person shall possess a firearm with a cartridge in any portion

of the mechanism; nor shall any person discharge across, in, or into

any portion of the state park system a firearm, bow and arrow, or air

or gas weapon or any device capable of injuring or killing any animal

or damaging or destroying any public or private property."
