Seal Beach
Jan 4, 1968

Mike saw Bill at Georgia Mae's over the weekend. The ship was undergoing final inspections and loading stores: 11,500 lbs of beef, 800 gallons of milk, 1,600 dozen eggs, and 800 lbs of popcorn. On January 9, Jouett loaded ammunition at Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. [Familygram, 19 Jan 1968]

Dear Mother & Dad,

As you know, I made it back out here okay, its really nice weather here but I still feel a little lazy after the two weeks leave. I guess I'll be back in the routine by the weekend.

Bill is going up to Georgia Mae's Friday night and I will get up there Sat. afternoon.

Its really going to be different when we leave here on the 16th. The liberty won't be often or as good but the time will go by pretty fast and before you know it we'll be back in the states.

We are having a lot of inspections this week and next. Next week we go up to Seal Beach and load ammo on Thursday and get back Friday. I wish I didn't have duty the last weekend here, but thats the way it goes.

Do you remember me telling you about that other 3rd class wanting me to take his duty? Well as I figured, he wanted me to take it for him Wed. I turned him down though, because I didn't feel like standing duty the day after I got back.

Tell David that we will get the boots next week and send them home when we have a chance.

I got the watch for Dad and got a band too. I hope he likes it. I also got grandpa a lighter. I'll try to mail them home this weekend from Georgia Mae's.

Heres my W-2 from the Navy for my active-duty. Put this check in the bank. We get paid again next week and I'll send home some more money.

Bill seems to be doing real fine. He too is getting a little itchy about leaving the states, just as I am.

I took the test for the Navy drivers license yesterday and passed it. I made a few mistakes but nothing bad. When my state license comes just send it on out here to me.

I am glad I did come home during the holidays. I think it helped my morale a lot and I'll be able to face the months overseas a little better.

I suppose David was really anxious to get back to school. Tell him to be good and work hard on his home-work.

Well, I have to go now and thats about all there is for now. I'll write again, soon.

Your son,

Mike
