Last Sea Exercise

The Jouett returned from its final pre-deployment exercise, reaching 90 miles off San Francisco.

Mike's paycheck reflected his new rate: $207, including $143 in back pay. He had reservations on American Airlines for the trip home.

Tuesday

Dear Mother + Dad,

Another week at sea and now we are back in port. I got the letter Dad wrote today. We got back here about 1500 today. We got as far north as 90 miles out of San Francisco. The next time we go to sea it will be for good.

It's really great having got this new rate. I got $207 payday of which $143 was back pay. Yes there are a few fringe benefits that I've waited a long time for. But they could never give me enough benefits to make me stay in here any longer than I have to.

Bill will probably be on his way back here tomorrow. I hope we can see one another before I come home.

I was surprized that you called me at Georgia Mae's that Friday. I figured you might call me there that weekend but wasn't sure.

That picture of Bill really makes him look happy. He looks like a real "Devil Dog."

You might know, the first day we get back, I have got duty. I have a four hour watch that starts at 2000 (8 PM).

I got reservations on American Airlines. Enclosed you will find my flight schedule. I think I'll call when I get in Chicago and let you know I'm on my way. I'll call after 4 PM from O'Hare airport.

It really seems strange that it's cold and snowing back home. The weather is really great out here.

Since you mentioned buying my return ticket that will be fine for Christmas. Actually that is what I had in mind if I were able to make it home.

I'm sorry this is so short but there hasn't been much happen during a week at sea. I'll let you hear from me once more before the 19th. Bye.

Your son,

Mike
