From Mike's letter, 2 Feb 1968: "By all means keep up the prayers for Bill and me, because there is no safe place when you are in the combat zone. We figure to draw combat pay 5 months of the 6 so you know we will see some action." [Letter]

From Mike's letter, 4 Feb 1968: "Last week the captian was talking to the crew. One of the first things he said was, 'No one is going to take the Jouett into port.' We will be operating off of N. Viet Nam but from what this buddy told me there isn't really that much action at sea." [Letter]

From Mike's letter, 4 Feb 1968: "I got a letter from Bill yesterday and he said he was to leave for Nam at 0930 on the 30th of Jan." [Letter]

As JOUETT moved ever westward, the crew were

conscious of the events of World War II. As

COMCRUDESPAC'S band played the National Anthem

in Pearl Harbor, many thoughts turned back to a

Sunday morning in 1941.

The sights of the Pacific were not strange to all

JOUETT men, however. Former residents of the

Philippines Islands crowded the rail as JOUETT

steamed into their homeland.
