Five days before deployment, Mike served Mass for the chaplain, played the family's tape recording for friends, and prepared his civilian clothes to leave at Georgia Mae's. He was working on an electronics correspondence course — 2 of 25 lessons done.

Sunday
Dear Mother & Dad,
Even though I am going to call tomorrow night I thought I'd go ahead and write. I owe you a letter anyway.
Today is Sunday and things are pretty quiet around here. Its 73° outside now and a real nice day. I wish I didn't have duty this weekend but thats the way it goes.
I served mass this morning for the chaplian. He said I did real good.
I drove one of the guys into town to pick up the mail this morning.
I was suppose to meet Bill here Friday evening, but he never made it for some reason. Maybe he is on his way over now.
Georgia Mae called me here on the ship yesterday and wondered if I'd heard from him. She thought she would be up there this weekend if he could make it.
I played the tape recording for them. They liked it but those kids couldn't sit still or be quiet during the whole thing.
I'll send those Christmas pictures back but I have some I'm waiting for to send with them.
I saw the movie "Valley of the Dolls" the other day. Its really a good movie, see it if you have a chance.
Things have been pretty busy on the ship in the past week. We have had a lot of inspections and they have been loading stores about every day.
Tell David that the boots are on their way. We mailed them from Oceanside, Tuesday evening. (Jan. 9)
I have got my civilian clothes ready to go. I may take them up to Georgia Maes Monday if we get liberty early.
I hope you can get things straightened out at work. I am sure it will work out okay if you can get back to only four hours.
I don't like this job either but all I can do is bear with it. Thats one thing about Navy vs civilian life, if you don't like it you can do something about it but not in this outfit.
My electronics correspondence course was waiting for me when I got back from leave. I have done 2 of the 25 lessons. It is a good one and is easy.
I hope you get the package with the watch okay. Georgia Mae was suppose to mail it for me last week.
Well thats about it for now. So long, I'll write again.
Your son,
Mike
