From Mike's letter, 30 Mar 1968: "I have sent some brochures on the stereo equipment I have bought... I can buy a cartridge recorder like yours for $34.00 and I'll get over to buy it next week. If you want to you can answer this with a tape and I'll send one back." — This purchase in Yokosuka is the origin of the family's cassette tape collection. [Letter]

From Mike's letter, 30 Mar 1968: "After those 45 days since our last liberty it was good to get off the ship Thursday and get some of that good American beer for 15¢." [Letter]

From Mike's letter, 30 Mar 1968: "I also bought a pair of 16 x 50 binoculars here for $17.50... I am going to get [a slide projector] here and I will be all set for slides." [Letter]

From the Apr 8 Familygram: "We were most fortunate in that our visit to Japan coincided with the first weeks of spring; the cherry blossoms, long a symbol of this island nation, were in full bloom while JOUETT was in port... Under the direction of the Chaplain of Destroyer Squadron ONE, LT A. R. TREIBEL, and JOUETT's Master Chief Petty Officer, J. V. PATTISON, [32 volunteers] contributed their labor to two small churches in villages near Yokosuka, completely painting one church and the pastor's home." [Familygram]

Context: On 4 April 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Jouett was in Yokosuka, Japan. Mike's letter of April 19 notes: "The ships in the fleet flew the flag at half-mast for about five days." [Letter, 19 Apr 1968]
