From the Jan 19 Familygram: "Tuesday, January 16th, was a warm, clear day in San Diego, but a number of eyes were moist as the long blast on JOUETT's whistle signified that she was backing away from pier No. 2... As JOUETT nosed her way out the channel, the pier thronged with families, the city of San Diego, and finally Point Loma disappeared in the mist as we proceeded west to new adventures and service to our country." [Familygram]

From Mike's letter, 21 Jan 1968: "I got back to the ship about 5 PM last Tuesday. Bill called us at Georgia Mae's about 10 Monday evening... I stopped at Oceanside on the way back to San Diego and saw him for an hour or so. That was a long night but since it was the last time I'd see anyone I knew, it was worth it." [Letter]
