2. Ship's Schedule. During our transit to Pearl Harbor, a full round of
communications and CIC exercises is scheduled. Because of the relatively high
speed of advance required, however, there will be a minimum of exercises that
involve ship maneuvers. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings JOUETT will
exercise at General Quarters and test fire gun mounts. A period has been set
aside each morning for the ships to practice making approaches on each other.
Friday afternoon JOUETT is scheduled for a 15 knot economy trial. JOUETT and
PREBLE will arrive in the Pearl Harbor op area on Sunday morning and conduct
AA gunnery, shore bombardment, and air control exercises. Arrival Pearl Harbor
is scheduled for 0800, Monday, 22 January.
3. Time Change. At 1900 all clocks will be set back one hour to conform to
Time zone VICTOR (+9).

4. Uniform. The following uniform regulations are effective immediately:
a. Uniform of the day for officers and chief petty officers is tropical
khaki long. Long sleeve khaki shirts are optional, but must be worn with a
tie.
b. Enlisted men standing watch in the pilot house, radio messengers,
missile house sentries, roving patrol, and men routinely working in office
spaces shall wear the uniform of the day - undress blues.
c. Enlisted men will not be required to shift to the uniform of the day
for evening meals. Clean presentable dungarees may be worn. A schedule will
be devised to press dungarees.
d. The blue ball cap may be worn except by messingers, sentries, patrols,
and pilot house watch.
e. All sentries, patrols, and messengers shall wear a clean, white guard
belt.
f. The uniform of the day will be changed to undress whites at 0800,
Saturday, 20 January. Liberty uniform in Pearl Harbor will be undress white
with neckerchief or tropical white long. A laundry and pressing schedule for
whites will be announced.
5. Security of Movements. JOUETT is now, and will be, operating under a
classified movement schedule. This schedule has not been widely disseminated
nor will it be, except in the cases of unclassified movements or port visits
which have been cleared and declassified. The details of our operational
assignments are similarly classified - e.g. assignment to a particular station
or task such as SAR or PIRAZ. The actual facts of our movements and assignments
will be quite widely known aboard JOUETT, however. Therefore all hands must be
constantly aware of security requirements. Do not talk about ship's operations
while ashore, especially to civilians or to persons unknown.
6. Check-ins. The following men will report to Ship's Office at 0830.
RD3 MCILWEE RD3 SMITH RDSN WYLLIS RD3 MANGERI
RD3 BRONCACCIO RDSN WOOD SD3 REYES TN LUZANO
RD2 RETTZO RD2 DEAVER RDSN VIORAL
7. Water Consumption. Fresh water aboard ship is not an unlimited commodity.
This ship is equipped with two distilling plant units which distill from sea
water the potable water which we use for cooking, drinking, laundering, and our
personal use; and feed water which is used for feeding our boilers. These dis-
tilling units make about 24,000 gallons per day necessitating very judicious use
of all water. The crew is allowed to use about 25 gallons per man per day. In
order to do this each must conserve water by taking only Navy type showers, using
water sparingly, and reporting any leaks to D. C. Central. Do your part. Do not
waste water!

NOTES
========================================================================================
First full day underway for the 1968 WestPac deployment. Jouett departed
San Diego January 16, 1968 — the same day Captain's Mast was held.
Seven sailors received non-judicial punishment for unauthorized absence (UA)
in the days and weeks leading up to deployment. Most were AWOL for short
periods during the Christmas/New Year's leave period or in the final days
before sailing. MM3 Edwards was the most serious case — he both went UA
and missed the ship's movement entirely (Article 87, UCMJ). SN Kortlang
went UA from January 14 to 16 — literally missing departure day.
Transit plan: San Diego to Pearl Harbor with exercises en route. GQ drills
with live gun mount firing, CIC exercises, economy trial. Jouett traveling
with USS Preble (DLG-15). Arrival Pearl Harbor: Monday, January 22, 1968.
Duty Division M — Mike's Missile division. The uniform change to tropical
khaki and the time zone change signal the ship heading west into the Pacific.
Security of Movements note is significant — from this point forward, the
ship's schedule, station assignments (SAR, PIRAZ), and movements were
classified. Crew warned not to discuss operations ashore.
Signed by CDR J.F. Addams, Executive Officer.
