USS Jouett Evening News, 26 January 1968: "TWO MOVES WERE MADE THURSDAY BY THE UNITED STATES IN CONNECTION WITH THE NORTH KOREAN CRISIS. NEARLY FIFTEEN THOUSAND RESERVE AIRMEN HAVE BEEN CALLED UP..." The ship's teletype news carried the Pueblo crisis and called-up reserves while Jouett transited the Pacific. [Evening News]
Context: The Tet Offensive began on January 30–31, 1968 — the largest coordinated offensive by NVA/Viet Cong forces during the entire war, with simultaneous attacks across South Vietnam. U.S. intelligence had completely failed to predict it. Mike's brother Bill Ducy (USMC) arrived at Da Nang on January 30 (per his letter). Jouett was still in transit, crossing the Pacific into what would become the most dangerous period of the Vietnam War.
