San Diego
Halloween

Mike sent home his first roll of film from the ship. A $17 check arrived out of the blue — reimbursement for travel expenses from San Diego to Seattle. He was weighing whether to come home for Christmas.

He needed his "Military Requirements PO 3 and 2" book sent from home — the reserve center had failed to record that he'd completed the course, and he might have to retake the test in February.

"I guess the one big thing on my mind now is weather to come home for Christmas or not. I'll have to talk to Bill and see what he is going to do then maybe make up my mind." [Letter]

Dear Mother and Dad,

I got your letter of the 23rd yesterday after we got back in port. It's really nice to have mail waiting for you after you've been out for a few days.

I hope you got my short note with the money before you sent the clothes. I got three of the newspapers today. It sure is nice to be able to read whats going on.

I sent the pictures to Bill and told him to send them back home when he finished with them.

Here is the first roll of film I took with my camera. You might wonder how Grant got that bad eye. I don't think I told you this, but I gave it to him. It took two stiches to close it up. I'll tell you some other time about it.

I guess the world is full of surprizes after what you told me about Jeanne. I wondered why they moved the wedding up from August to July, now its pretty apparent why. But from what you've told me it looks like they didn't move the date up quite enough.

I guess the one big thing on my mind now is weather to come home for Christmas or not. I'll have to talk to Bill and see what he is going to do then maybe make up my mind. I'm afraid that things may be just as boring as when I left and I don't want that.

I got the new envelopes and the stamps. I haven't had a chance to see the postal clerk but will probable sell them for face value.

It seems like just about every time you write, David is out of school. I bet he looks forward to the next day off so he can do what he wants to. Be sure to take a picture of him in his new suit. Tell him I said for him to keep those new shoes shined up.

So he out Halloweening tonight?

Out of the clear blue sky today I got a check for $17. This was to cover my eating and living expenses for the trip from San Diego to Seattle. Needless to say I again made money on that deal.

Do you remember that big box I left laying in the closet floor in the back bedroom? If you look in there you will find a question and answer book titled "Military Requirements PO 3 and 2". Send that out here as soon as you can. If it isn't there look every where you can. I think that Swinger camera and some other Navy papers were in there too. I need this because that damned reserve center did not enter it in my record that I completed the course. I have to do this over again real quick in case I have to take the test in Feb.

I will most likely go up to see Georgia Mae this weekend. I can leave here at 4 PM Friday and don't have to be back till Monday morning. I am going to try to get in touch with Bill and see if he can make it too.

I hope you will like your new job at Roosevelt. I imagine working the extra two hours won't be too hard to get use to.

Well I hope I didn't forget anything to say. I have one more letter to write then will get ready for bed. I'll write again. Bye

Your son,

Mike
